Assessment of Fetal Age in Cows
The assessment of fetal age in cows is important for several practical and legal reasons, including identifying the age of an aborted fetus, fulfilling insurance requirements, and addressing veterolegal cases.
The determination of fetal age is required for the following:
- To know the age of the aborted fetus
- For insurance purpose
- In Veterolegal cases
There are two methods are available to determine the age of the fetus:
- Crown rump length (CR length)
- CVR-Length-crown vertebral rump length
1. Crown Rump Length (CR Length)
Crown rump length is measured from the frontal bone to the base of the tail or it is the least straight distance measured from the inner canthus to the base of the tail.
CR length in inches multiply by 2 and square root of this will give the gestational age approximately in months.
Formula = CR in inches X 2 and square root
2. Crown Vertebral Rump Length (CVR Length)
CVR is the total length of vertebral column from the atlas to the base of the tail along the course of fetus.
Formula = CVR less than 20 cm
- Y = 28.66+4.496x
- Y = Gestational age
- X = CVR length in cm
Formula = CVR more than 20 cm
- Y = 73.54+2.256x
- Y = Gestational age
- X = CVR length in cm
