Buserelin
Buserelin is a potent synthetic gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogue used in veterinary reproduction. Its principal applications rely on pituitary gonadotropin release to induce ovulation or coordinate reproductive events. Clinical protocols include selected ovarian disorders and timed-insemination programs in cattle, with additional supported uses in mares and rabbits.
Group
GnRH agonist
Mechanism of Action
Buserelin binds pituitary GnRH receptors and stimulates release of luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone. In a reproductively responsive animal, the resulting gonadotropin signal can trigger ovulation, luteinization or maturation of a suitable follicular population. Subsequent luteal activity supports progesterone production. The response depends on ovarian status and the reproductive protocol.
Dose Rates
Cattle
| Use / stage | Dose | Route | Schedule | Instructions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Follicular ovarian cysts | 20 mcg/animal | IM, IV, SC | Once | For synchronization, use within the complete prostaglandin/progestagen protocol; timing is not defined by this dose alone. |
| Conception support | 10 mcg/animal | IM, IV, SC | Once | For synchronization, use within the complete prostaglandin/progestagen protocol; timing is not defined by this dose alone. |
| Timed-insemination synchronization | 10 mcg/animal | IM, IV, SC | Once | For synchronization, use within the complete prostaglandin/progestagen protocol; timing is not defined by this dose alone. |
Horses
| Use / stage | Dose | Route | Schedule | Instructions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ovulation induction | 40 mcg/animal | IM, IV, SC | Once | Mares; ovulation induction requires a mature follicle. |
| Conception support | 40 mcg/animal | IM, IV, SC | Once | Mares; ovulation induction requires a mature follicle. |
Rabbits
| Use / stage | Dose | Route | Schedule | Instructions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ovulation induction | 0.8 mcg/animal | IM, IV, SC | Once | Rabbit does; postpartum ovulation-induction use is product-specific. |
| Conception support | 0.8 mcg/animal | IM, IV, SC | Once | Rabbit does; postpartum ovulation-induction use is product-specific. |
Indications
- Treatment of cattle infertility associated with follicular ovarian cysts.
- Induction or synchronization of ovulation in cattle within supported timed-insemination protocols.
- Selected improvement of pregnancy rate in cattle using an evidence-based reproductive protocol.
- Induction of ovulation in mares with a suitable mature follicle.
- Induction of ovulation or selected fertility-management protocols in rabbit does.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity; reproductive treatment requires confirmation of the relevant cycle stage and ovarian status.
Interactions
- Prostaglandins or progestagens form part of specific synchronization protocols; timing cannot be inferred from buserelin dose alone.
Adverse effects
- Injection-site reactions or hypersensitivity are possible.
Toxicity
Specific veterinary overdose information is limited; monitor clinically and reassess reproductive effects.
Preparations
| Preparation | Form | Strength | Route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Receptal VET 4 mcg/mL Buserelin base equivalent to 4.2 mcg/mL buserelin acetate; do not count the acetate as a second active ingredient. | Injection | 4 mcg / mL | IM, IV, SC |
Monitoring and Administration
Use reproductive examination or ultrasound to select timing. A single hormone injection does not replace diagnosis of infertility.
Receptal contains 4.2 mcg buserelin acetate equivalent to 4 mcg buserelin per mL; calculation below uses buserelin equivalent.
Receptal India information specifies 2-8°C storage, protected from heat.
