Flumethrin
Flumethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid used in veterinary topical ectoparasiticides. Livestock formulations target ticks and selected lice or mites, while some companion-animal collars combine it with another insecticide. Its particular contribution in those combinations is principally acaricidal, with additional parasite coverage supplied by the partner ingredient.
Group
Synthetic pyrethroid ectoparasiticide
Mechanism of Action
Flumethrin modifies arthropod voltage-gated sodium-channel function and prolongs abnormal excitation of nerve membranes. Disrupted conduction causes paralysis and death of susceptible ectoparasites. Contact exposure also affects female tick survival and reduces production of viable offspring. Distribution over the host surface supports activity from the corresponding pour-on, dip or collar formulation.
Dose Rates
Cattle
| Use / stage | Dose | Route | Schedule | Instructions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tick control – pour-on | Reference only | TOPICAL | Bayticol 1% is a ready-to-use pour-on with a product weight/volume table. Use that complete table; do not extrapolate its directions to a different flumethrin formulation. | |
| Tick and lice control – 1% pour-on | 1 mg/kg | TOPICAL | Once | For a 10 mg/mL cattle pour-on, 1 mL per 10 kg equals 1 mg/kg. Apply evenly along the backline from shoulder to tail; not a dip dilution. |
Indications
- Treatment or control of susceptible tick infestations in cattle or sheep with an indicated product.
- Control of selected sucking lice or mange mites in livestock using a supported formulation.
- Treatment or prevention of susceptible tick infestations in dogs or cats with an appropriate flumethrin-containing collar.
Contraindications
- Do not use livestock formulations on cats or other unsupported species.
Interactions
- Other neurotoxic insecticides may increase adverse effects.
Adverse effects
- Local skin irritation; salivation, tremor or ataxia with excessive exposure.
Toxicity
Remove topical contamination and support the patient; control tremor, hyperthermia and respiratory compromise if present.
Preparations
| Preparation | Form | Strength | Route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flumitas pour-on 10 mg/mL | Other | 10 mg / mL | TOPICAL |
| Bayticol 1% pour-on Ready-to-use topical presentation; do not inject or substitute a concentrated dip. | Other | 10 mg / mL | TOPICAL |
Monitoring and Administration
Apply ready-to-use pour-on along the backline using the product weight table; do not dilute it as a dip.
Keep away from watercourses and prevent ingestion. Dilutions for 6%, 7.5% or other concentrates are not inferred from a 1% pour-on.
