Glucosamine Chondroitin Sulfate for Animals

Glucosamine Chondroitin Sulfate

Glucosamine Chondroitin Sulfate is used in veterinary medicine for adjunctive management of degenerative joint disease.

Group

Joint nutritional supplement

Mechanism of Action

Provides precursors associated with cartilage glycosaminoglycan synthesis; clinical response is inconsistent.

Dose Rates

Horse

Use / stageDoseRouteScheduleInstructions
Joint supplement loadingReference onlyPOGlucosamine 12 mg/kg plus chondroitin sulfate 3.8 mg/kg twice daily for 4 weeks; then glucosamine 4 mg/kg plus chondroitin 1.3 mg/kg, with maintenance frequency not explicitly restated.
Alternative joint supplement loadingReference onlyPOGlucosamine 22 mg/kg plus chondroitin sulfate 8.8 mg/kg daily. Component-specific combination protocol.

Dog

Use / stageDoseRouteScheduleInstructions
Glucosamine supplementation22 mg/kgPOEvery 24 hGlucosamine component only, not combined glucosamine/chondroitin mass.
Glucosamine supplementation44 mg/kgPOEvery 24 hHigher initial or escalation amount; glucosamine component only.
Chondroitin-component supplementationReference onlyPO13–15 mg/kg of the chondroitin component every 24–48 hours. This is not the glucosamine dose or the combined mass; a single parent active ingredient cannot select both component bases safely.
Cancer-pain supplement adjunctReference onlyPO15–30 mg/kg of the chondroitin component daily for 4–6 weeks, then halve the amount. A combination supplement is used; the amount is not total product mass.

Glucosamine supplementation44 mg/kgPOEvery 24 hHigher initial or escalation amount; glucosamine component only.
Chondroitin-component supplementationReference onlyPO15–20 mg/kg of the chondroitin component every 24–48 hours.

Indications

  • Adjunctive management of degenerative joint disease

Contraindications

  • Safety in diabetic or diabetes-prone obese animals is incompletely established.

Interactions

  • Can be used with NSAIDs.

Adverse effects

  • Soft stools, gas and possible hypersensitivity

Monitoring and Administration

Assess mobility and comfort rather than assuming disease modification. Product purity, component amounts and salt forms vary.

General source glucosamine amounts are 22 mg/kg/day, increased to 44 mg/kg/day if needed; these are glucosamine-component amounts and do not define a complete combination-product regimen.

Historical capsule counts: 1–2 daily for dogs, 2–4 for large dogs, and 1 daily for cats, but exact product variants and dog-size boundaries are not fully defined.

The historical Cosequin description includes unspecified mixed glycosaminoglycans and ambiguously related manganese amounts; a complete active-ingredient list cannot be encoded reliably from it.
