Doxapram

Doxapram is used in veterinary medicine for short-term respiratory stimulation.

Group

Respiratory stimulant

Mechanism of Action

Inhibits carotid-body potassium channels and increases respiratory drive.

Indications

  • Short-term respiratory stimulation
  • Neonatal respiratory depression
  • Laryngeal-function assessment adjunct

Contraindications

  • Cardiac or respiratory arrest; ventilation and resuscitation are required.
  • Not a substitute for assisted ventilation.

Interactions

  • Theophylline or aminophylline may increase CNS excitation.

Adverse effects

  • CNS excitement, seizures, sweating and cardiovascular stimulation
