Amoxicillin for Animals

Amoxicillin

Beta-lactam antibacterial for susceptible infections; oral absorption is better than ampicillin in small animals.

Amoxicillin/clavulanate: Combination antibacterial that extends amoxicillin activity against selected beta-lactamase-producing organisms.

Amoxicillin/sulbactam: Injectable combination available in a verified 2:1 amoxicillin:sulbactam product.

Group

Aminopenicillin antibacterial

Mechanism of Action

Inhibits bacterial cell-wall synthesis. Beta-lactamase-producing staphylococci and many Enterobacteriaceae are resistant.

Amoxicillin/clavulanate: Amoxicillin inhibits cell-wall synthesis; clavulanate inhibits susceptible beta-lactamases. This does not overcome every resistance mechanism.

Amoxicillin/sulbactam: Amoxicillin inhibits bacterial cell-wall synthesis; sulbactam protects against susceptible beta-lactamases.

Monitoring and Administration

Use culture and susceptibility results where appropriate; most Enterobacteriaceae are unsuitable targets except selected uncomplicated lower urinary infections.

Store dry formulations protected from moisture in a sealed container. Oral suspensions described here have 14-day stability; optimum solution pH is 5.8–6.5.

Susceptibility criteria use ampicillin testing as the surrogate: MIC ≤0.25 mcg/mL for the listed staphylococcal, streptococcal, gram-negative, bovine and equine respiratory isolates. For uncomplicated lower urinary infection, the listed canine threshold is ≤8 mcg/mL and may also apply to cats. Most Enterobacteriaceae test resistant at the lower threshold.

Amoxicillin trihydrate injectable strengths of 100 and 250 mg/mL are described, but their route and active-equivalent basis are not explicit enough to define a compatible preparation.

Monitor response and gastrointestinal tolerance. Copper-reduction urine-glucose tests may be falsely positive; glucose-oxidase methods are unaffected. Beta-lactams can lower measured aminoglycoside concentrations in stored samples; freeze samples if analysis is delayed.

Amoxicillin can be given with food if gastrointestinal upset occurs. Oral suspensions are generally discarded after 14 days; refrigeration is preferred. Amoxi-Mast supplies 62.5 mg per 10 mL intramammary syringe, but no intramammary treatment schedule is established in these excerpts.

Amoxicillin/clavulanate: Dose basis is important: veterinary formulations use a 4:1 amoxicillin:clavulanate ratio, while human products vary. A combined-ingredient dose must not be converted using one ingredient alone.

Amoxicillin/clavulanate: Use susceptibility results; many Enterobacteriaceae remain clinically resistant outside uncomplicated lower urinary infection.

Amoxicillin/clavulanate: Protect from moisture and light; keep below 24°C. Reconstituted oral products described here remain stable for 10 days. Acidic compounded liquids may rapidly lose clavulanate potency.

Amoxicillin/clavulanate: Combination preparation conversion requires explicit dose-component and ratio support; do not treat the combined preparation as a single ingredient.

Amoxicillin/clavulanate: The paired amoxicillin/clavulanate MIC criterion is ≤0.25/0.12 mcg/mL for the listed organisms; uncomplicated lower urinary infection uses ≤8/4 mcg/mL in dogs and may apply to cats. The two numbers identify different ingredients.

Amoxicillin/clavulanate: Monitor response and gastrointestinal tolerance. Copper-reduction urine-glucose tests may be falsely positive; glucose-oxidase methods are unaffected. Beta-lactams can lower measured aminoglycoside concentrations in stored samples; freeze samples if analysis is delayed.

Amoxicillin/clavulanate: The 4:1 veterinary oral suspension described here is reconstituted with 14 mL water to the specified bottle, then refrigerated and discarded after 10 days; room-temperature stability is only 48 hours. This bottle-specific water addition must not be applied to other pack sizes.

Amoxicillin/clavulanate regimens are listed separately within this monograph. Their stated ingredient or combined-dose basis and formulation ratio must be retained; they are not interchangeable with the plain antibiotic regimen.

Amoxicillin/sulbactam: The injectable product contains 3000 mg amoxicillin plus 1500 mg sulbactam as active equivalents from their sodium salts, in a 4.5 g vial. Final reconstitution concentration is not established.

Amoxicillin/sulbactam: No complete species-specific dosing schedule is established for this entry. Do not substitute an ampicillin/sulbactam regimen or treat a combined-product amount as amoxicillin alone.

Amoxicillin/sulbactam regimens are listed separately within this monograph. Their stated ingredient or combined-dose basis and formulation ratio must be retained; they are not interchangeable with the plain antibiotic regimen.

Combination-dose interpretation: if a regimen specifies the amoxicillin component, calculate quantity using only the amoxicillin content of the selected preparation. A tablet containing 200 mg amoxicillin plus 50 mg clavulanate has a mathematical equivalent of half a tablet for 100 mg amoxicillin, also delivering 25 mg clavulanate. This calculation does not override an explicit whole-tablet product instruction.

Some amoxicillin/clavulanate regimens in this monograph are expressed as the combined amount. Retain that basis; do not silently reinterpret a combined mg/kg value as amoxicillin-only mg/kg. The formulation ratio and the co-delivered inhibitor amount remain clinically relevant even when one ingredient determines the calculated quantity.
