Coccidiosis in Turkey
Coccidiosis in Turkey caused by Eimeria adenoids, E. meleagrids and E. meleagrimitis. It affect young birds especially at 4-5 weeks age.
Etiology
- E. adenoids is the primary cause of turkey coccidiosis.
- E. meleagrids.
- E. meleagrimitis.
Epidemiology
- Age: Young birds are highly susceptible especially at 4-5 weeks.
- Risk Factors
- Intensive breeding (result in heavy loss)
- Over crowding
- Poor sanitation- dampness of house
- Sporulation period: one day.
- Prepatent period: 5 days.
- Pathogenesis by gametogony and schizogony.
Clinical manifestation
- Watery diarrhoea with mucus and flecks of blood.
Necropsy Finding
Diagnosis
- Similar to chicken (Coccidiosis in Chicken).
Treatment
- Sulphonamides are again the drugs of choice for treatment.
- For prophylaxis, coccidiostats are normallv incorporated in the feed for the first 12-16 weeks of life.
- Thc drugs commonly used are sulphaquinoxalinc, a mixture of amprolium, ethopabate and sulphaquinoxaline, or halofuginone at a low concentration.
Prevention and control
- Similar to chicken (Coccidiosis in Chicken).
