Culicidae Family (Mosquitoes): Morphology, Life Cycle, and Characteristics
The Culicidae family comprises mosquitoes, which are medically and veterinary important insects belonging to the order Diptera. Mosquitoes act as vectors for numerous pathogens affecting both humans and animals, making them significant in public health and veterinary parasitology.
Morphology of the Culicidae Family
The head is small and spherical. The antennae are long, slender, and 14ā15 segmented (plumose in males and pilose in females).
The mouthparts are adapted for piercing and sucking plant juices and blood. Only the female sucks blood, whereas the male feeds on plant juices and nectar. The mouthparts are long and slender and consist of a pair of mandibles that are long and needle-like and used to pierce the skin. The tips of the mandibles and maxillae are serrated.
The maxillae are paired structures adjacent to the mandibles. They are broader, thicker, and armed with recurved teeth at their tips. A single labium ends in labella. The food channel is formed by the apposition of the hypopharynx and labrum-epipharynx. The maxillary palps are four-segmented. The mouthparts are modified into a stylet (needle-like structure).
The eyes are prominent, holoptic in males and dichoptic in females. Ocelli are absent.
The thorax is wedge-shaped or triangular.
The metathorax bears the second pair of wings in the form of halteres (balancers). The wings bear elongate, leaf-like scales along the margins and veins. There are six longitudinal veins, of which Lā, Lā, and Lā have forked tips. Anopheles wings have dark spots, blotches, or dappling.
There are three pairs of legs. While at rest, the third pair of legs does not rest on the ground.
The abdomen is long and slender.
Life Cycle
The male feeds on plant juices, whereas the female is a blood feeder. The female produces a characteristic buzzing sound that attracts the male. Females are nocturnal in habit. After engorging on blood, a female may carry a blood meal weighing up to twice her own body weight. Both males and females hide during the daytime in dark places or in dark-colored clothing, preferably under umbrellas or inside socks and shoes.
Females are attracted to light at night and also to the warmth of vertebrate hosts. A blood meal is required for egg production.
Rainfall has a marked effect on mosquito development. In the absence of rainfall, mosquito populations remain low. Following rainfall, mosquito numbers increase. However, heavy rainfall may temporarily reduce the population, whereas the formation of stagnant pools after rainfall promotes mosquito breeding and increases the population.
Eggs
Eggs are laid on water or on floating vegetation. Some species lay eggs in fresh water, others in stagnant water or artificial containers. Some species even lay their eggs in seawater.
Larvae
The larvae that emerge from the eggs are known as “wrigglers” because they move with a wriggling motion. They feed on algae and other organic matter present in the water. Some species are predaceous and feed on other organisms. During normal development, they molt four times. The final molt occurs during pupation.
The larvae have a small head and a pair of mouth brushes, which create negative pressure for feeding. The thorax is unsegmented and bears three sets of feathered hairs.
The abdomen consists of nine segments and is usually held at an angle. On the lateral aspect of the abdominal segments, there are tufts of hairs that help the larvae cling to the water surface. A siphon tube is present (absent in Anopheles spp.) and arises from the fused eighth and ninth abdominal segments.
On the dorsal aspect of the eighth abdominal segment, there is a row of spines known as the comb. On the lateral aspect of the siphon tube, there is a row of spines known as the pecten. The ninth segment ends in two pairs of gills and bears a pair of dorsal and ventral tufts of hairs.
Pupa
The pupa is obtectate and is known as a “tumbler.” It swims by paddling movements. It is aquatic in habit and comma-shaped. The body consists of a fused head and thorax, with an elongated abdomen. On the dorsal aspect of the cephalothoracic region, a pair of respiratory trumpets is present.
The ninth segment bears a pair of paddles that enable the pupa to move up and down in the water. Pupae do not feed.

The family Culicidae includes several medically and veterinary important mosquito genera that act as vectors of numerous pathogens. The most important members are Anopheles spp., the primary vectors of malaria parasites (Plasmodium spp.); Aedes spp. (e.g., Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus), which transmit dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever viruses; Culex spp., important vectors of West Nile virus, Japanese encephalitis virus, and filarial nematodes; Mansonia spp., which transmit filarial parasites such as Brugia malayi; and Haemagogus spp. and Sabethes spp., which serve as vectors of yellow fever virus in tropical regions.
