Functions of the ovarian follicle and fluid

These are some functions of the ovarian follicle and fluid –

  1. Follicular fluid is transudate from plasma across the follicular wall
  2. Accumulates in the antral spaces and merges them
  3. Contains carbohydrates, proteins, amino acids, enzymes and hormones, Gonadotrophins, sex steroids, prostaglandins, Immunoglobulins IgA and IgG are present
  4. Composition modified by the follicular cells
  5. Functions of follicular fluid – Regulation of granulosa cells, Synchronous, growth of the follicle and the oocyte
  6. Follicular fluid function as a vehicle for the transport of the oocyte from the rupturing follicle at the time of ovulation
  7. Capacitation of sperm
  8. Fertilization and transport of zygote
