Abducent nerve

Abducent nerve is a motor nerve. It arises just behind the pons, lateral to the inferior pyramid of the medulla. It passes forward across the pons, pierces the dura and accompanies the nerves in the cavernous sinus. It leaves the cranium through the foramen orbitorotundum reaches the orbit and supplies the lateral rectus and retractor oculi.
