Enalapril for Animals

Enalapril Maleate

Enalapril for animals is an ACE (Angiotensin Converting Enzyme) inhibitor. inhibits the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II.

Group

Enalapril Maleate is grouped into ACE Inhibitors and Vasodilators.

Mechanism of Action

Enalapril inhibits the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II. Angiotensin II is a potent vasoconstrictor and also stimulates sympathetic stimulation, renal hypertension, and the synthesis of aldosterone. The ability of aldosterone to cause sodium and water retention contributes to congestion.

Enalapril causes vasodilation and decreases aldosterone levels.

Dose Rates

Dog and Cats: 0.5 to 1 mg/kg body weight q12-24hrs PO

Indications

  • To treat Hypertension
  • To treat Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)

Pimobendan, Frusemide (with Spironolactone or alone), and Digoxin are used with Enalapril in the management of Congestive Heart Failure.

Contraindications

  • Enalapril Maleate should not be given in Pregnant Animals

Interactions

  • If used with multiple hypotension-causing drugs, it may cause severe hypotension.

Adverse effects

  • Azotemia (In some patient)

Toxicity

An excessive dose of Enalapril can cause severe hypotension, which leads to the collapse of animals.

Management of hypotension in cases of toxicity should be done accordingly

  • Fluid therapy
  • Adrenaline
  • Naloxone– an opioid receptor antagonist, has been shown to increase blood pressure in ACE inhibitor overdoses (read here)
  • Activated Charcoal in case of oral ingestion
